Diary of an average angler

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Earith (15)

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Starting cloudy but reducing cloud and warm sun later. Light breeze.
Tackle: Drennan 1¾ TC 12ft 'Specialist Barbel', Shimano 5000 RE baitrunner, 2SSG on sliding bead link, 8lb line to 10 eyed hook.
Baits: Sweetcorn, bread flake & luncheon meat.
Fish: Two bream and lost fish.

Another trip to Earith hoping for a tench or two. I returned to my favourite spot at the back of the lake and for most of the day I was the only angler on the lake. So it was very peaceful and the ambiance very satisfying. As for the fishing, not so good. An early bream kicked things off, after which it was a bit of a struggle with lost fish and a spectacular break-off.

Arrival time: 09.30
Weather: A bright sunny day with a little breeze and becoming very warm.
Tackle: 14ft Shimano match rod, Rapidex II 2400 centrepin, 6lb line to 14 eyed hook.
Drennan 1¾ TC 12ft 'Specialist Barbel', Shimano 5000 RE baitrunner, 2SSG link, 8lb line to 10 eyed hook.
Baits: Sweetcorn, bread flake & luncheon meat.
Fish: One hard-earned bream!

After having not got out fishing for nearly a month I returned to Earith, once again in the hope of catching a tench or two. The other reason for choosing Earith was that I was meeting up with a friend, Chris, and the natural banks on this lake allow a side-by-side arrangement, unlike fixed position platforms. It was very warm, and the high pressure climatic conditions were still present, but in all other respects things looked perfect. A gorgeous looking swim and calm conditions.

Arrival time: 09.30
Weather: A bright sunny day with a light breeze but still not over warm.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Speedia 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 14 eyed hook.
Baits: Bread flake & luncheon meat.
Fish: A tench, a roach/bream hybrid and a bream.

After some warmer weather I returned to this Earith lake in the hope of catching a tench. There was nobody there when I arrived so I was looking forward to a quiet and peaceful session. Unfortunately my hopes were misplaced as a lot of people turned up later, and the owner was grass cutting throughout my stay, adding a loud background drone to a lot of talking and occasional shouting. But I managed one tench, so you could say that it was a qualified success.

Arrival time: 09.30
Weather: Chilly start followed by a bright sunny day with a light breeze.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Speedia 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 14 eyed hook.
Baits: Maggots, sweet corn, bread flake & luncheon meat.
Fish: A couple of small roach and 4 bream.

Another early spring session that turned out to be a bit challenging. A high pressure system had been giving us cold nights and clear blue sky days and it seemed a pity not to enjoy such beautiful weather. Unfortunately such conditions aren't always great for fishing and so it proved. I managed a few fish but it was challenging on a water that usually is far more reliable.

River Great Ouse - Offord (41)

Mill Stream & Car Park Pool

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Arrival time: 10.30.
Weather: Much milder than of late with warmth in the sun and a gentle breeze.
Tackle: Drennan 1¾lb TC 12ft 'Specialist Barbel', Shimano 5000 RE baitrunner, 2SSG link, 8lb line to #8 eyed hook. (Tackled up for small stream chub!).
Baits: bread flake & cheese paste.
Fish: One bream.

Having been away from the water for almost three weeks I was keen to get out, even though recent heavy rain was affecting the rivers - again! I missed a perfect day the previous week when the rivers had fined down but I wasn't feeling up to going. It turned out to be a last minute decision on choice of venue as I compared the water level data on the government web site. In the end I opted for Offord as it was the only one of three possible choices that was not showing rising levels. It also offered some choices if the mill stream proved not to be fishable.

Top Stream & Car Park Pool

Arrival time: 10.00
Weather: Cold & damp with a chilly north-westerly wind. Mainly overcast with occasional sunny intervals.
Tackle: 9ft Shimano Aero X1 feeder rod with 1oz quiver, Shimano Exage 1000RC reel, 5lb line direct to 10 eyed hook.
Baits: Maggots and worms.
Fish: One decent bream, a very small roach and a minuscule dace.

The EA website and the OBAS club Facebook page suggested that the river level at Offord had returned to normal so I decided to take a gamble and give it a try. I headed for the Top Stream as I thought it would probably be the least affected by the extra water, but I was to be proved wrong. It had a strongish flow and was very coloured. What's more the bank was slippery and quite dangerous. I had hoped for perch, thus the choice of maggots and worms as bait but I soon doubted my chances.
