Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

River Great Ouse - Offord (10)

Sismey Island

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Arrival time: 10.00
Weather: Overcast and very breezy but not too cold. A bit of weak sun later in the day.
Tackle: 11' 6" Hardy Marksman Specimen Avon, link leger/feeder, 8lb line.
Baits: Cheese paste.
Fish: Two chub

I've been suffering a bit from what I suspect is a pulled tendon in my thigh and this has made walking a bit difficult. So it was with a bit of trepidation that I set off today. But fortunately it didn't bother me too much, although it certainly slowed my progress.

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Breezy with a bit of light drizzle.
Tackle: 10ft Fishtec Compact Float, link leger, 6lb line.
Baits: Fox Spikey lure. Cheese paste.
Fish: One chub

After limited success with chub recently, today I decided to try lure fishing for perch. Unfortunately this was less successful than my efforts after chub. But it was an interesting diversion.

Arrival time: 11.00 (approx)
Weather: Very breezy but earlier rain had cleared.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Specimen Avon, Shimano Exage 4000RC, link leger, 8lb line, 8 hook
Baits: Cheese paste.
Fish: One chub

Having blanked at the Alconbury Brook earlier in the morning I drove over to Offord to try my luck in the mill stream.

Arriving later than normal I was pleased to see only one other car in the car park. I made my to the mill stream and was doubly pleased to see that the water level had returned to normal and that there were no other anglers there. I had high hopes.

Arrival time: 9.00
Weather: Quite chilly but not too windy. Bright spells but clouds were gathering.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Specimen Avon, Shimano Exage 4000RC, link leger, 8lb line, 8 hook
Baits: Spam, cheese paste.
Fish: None

My hopes that the water level would have receded were misplaced since although the level was down, it was still way above normal. Once again I blanked.

Arrival time: 10.00
Weather: Very warm for September. 26℃ when I left!
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Specimen Avon, Shimano Exage 4000RC, link leger, 8lb line, 10 hook
Baits: Spam, bread paste.
Fish: Two chub best around 2lb. Lost two fish.

Today didn't start well. I left my landing net handle at home and wasted an hour going back to fetch it.

The idea today was to revisit the two spots where I had lost better fish on the previous visit.

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Bright with a bit of chill in the breeze. Warmer later.
Tackle: 11ft Masterline 'John Wilson' Avon, 2oz quiver, link leger, 5lb line, 12 hook
Baits: Spam and bread flake.
Fish: Four chub best around 1¼lb. Lost two better fish.

After videoing my trip to the Chubb Stream I again set out to video this outing. I headed for the swim just below the weir outflow where I've fished previously with the hope of a quick fish. But it wasn't to be and I waited a quarter of an hour before taking a small chub of around ¾lb. I had left the video running and captured the bite and the landing of the fish.
