Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Arrival time: 09.30
Weather: A bright sunny day with a little breeze and becoming very warm.
Tackle: 14ft Shimano match rod, Rapidex II 2400 centrepin, 6lb line to 14 eyed hook.
Drennan 1¾ TC 12ft 'Specialist Barbel', Shimano 5000 RE baitrunner, 2SSG link, 8lb line to 10 eyed hook.
Baits: Sweetcorn, bread flake & luncheon meat.
Fish: One hard-earned bream!

After having not got out fishing for nearly a month I returned to Earith, once again in the hope of catching a tench or two. The other reason for choosing Earith was that I was meeting up with a friend, Chris, and the natural banks on this lake allow a side-by-side arrangement, unlike fixed position platforms. It was very warm, and the high pressure climatic conditions were still present, but in all other respects things looked perfect. A gorgeous looking swim and calm conditions.

Arrival time: 09.30
Weather: A bright sunny day with a light breeze but still not over warm.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Speedia 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 14 eyed hook.
Baits: Bread flake & luncheon meat.
Fish: A tench, a roach/bream hybrid and a bream.

After some warmer weather I returned to this Earith lake in the hope of catching a tench. There was nobody there when I arrived so I was looking forward to a quiet and peaceful session. Unfortunately my hopes were misplaced as a lot of people turned up later, and the owner was grass cutting throughout my stay, adding a loud background drone to a lot of talking and occasional shouting. But I managed one tench, so you could say that it was a qualified success.

Arrival time: 09.30
Weather: Chilly start followed by a bright sunny day with a light breeze.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Speedia 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 14 eyed hook.
Baits: Maggots, sweet corn, bread flake & luncheon meat.
Fish: A couple of small roach and 4 bream.

Another early spring session that turned out to be a bit challenging. A high pressure system had been giving us cold nights and clear blue sky days and it seemed a pity not to enjoy such beautiful weather. Unfortunately such conditions aren't always great for fishing and so it proved. I managed a few fish but it was challenging on a water that usually is far more reliable.

Trying a different filming technique

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Bright with increasing cloud and windy.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Allcocks 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 14 eyed hook.
Baits: Worms & sweet corn.
Fish: One small rudd and a small tench with a nice Koi carp later in the session.

After quite limited success on the rivers I decided to go to a favourite small lake at Earith. It was also an opportunity to try out a different filming technique after my headcam failed on the previous trip. It's fair to say that it didn't work that well. And the fishing wasn't great either.

No head-cam today!

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Overcast with hardly any wind and rain forecast.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Allcocks 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 10 eyed hook.
Baits: White bread flake & spam.
Fish: 8 bream, a crucian & a crucian hybrid + a lost carp.

I've been alternating between Earith and Fields End since getting fishing again this spring, my other normal choice of venue, the Clay Pit, being closed for spawning. Today I was back at Earith and once again hoping for some tench. Things didn't start well when I discovered that I hadn't replaced the SD memory card in my head-cam, thus requiring me to improvise filming using my iPhone and a camcorder. When I eventually got set up my first hooked fish was almost certainly a largish carp that tore off into a large bed of lilies, leaving me attached to a lily stem. I got everything back but it wasn't a great start. I had switched from bread flake to spam which had it seems tempted the carp.

A short session

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Sunny with light clouds. Becoming very warm.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Allcocks 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 10 eyed hook.
Baits: Seedy bread flake with crumbed bread & 'insect feast' bird food as groundbait.
Fish: 6 bream (one hybrid) and 2 tench. + a lost carp.

The day didn't start well when my car wouldn't start. In fact it was dead, no warning lights, nothing. It later transpired that the battery had failed completely. Fortunately my wife's car was available but with my car problem in the back of my mind I had been in two minds whether to go. The weather forecast was perfect and in the end I set off, but I only stayed for just over three hours as I wanted to get back to sort out the car. Fortunately I had some decent sport in those three hours.
